During hurricanes, wind pressure and wind-blown projectiles cause broken windows and glass doors. 

     Tree branches, outdoor furniture, trashcans, children's toys, roof shingles, and many other projectiles are hurled through the air during a hurricane.  When a window or patio door is broken, wind and rain invade the home or business. 

     In addition to the obvious water damage, once the integrity of a structure is broken, the resultant storm pressure may blow out other windows and lift roofs from the structures.  Technically this “Venturi Effect” is a special case of the Bernoulli Principle, or the reduction of pressure producing a partial vacuum, leading to disaster.  See the illustration below from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for more information.
